Andrew Gelman is a transplant immunologist and Professor of Surgery and Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He serves as the Jacqueline G. and William E. Maritz Endowed Chair in Immunology and Oncology and Chief of the Section of Transplant & Immunology Research.
Prof. Gelman investigates the mechanisms underlying lung transplant rejection, with his team focusing on metabolism-based therapies and imaging diagnostics for lung transplant recipients. His laboratory investigates how ischemia-reperfusion injury affects lung allograft survival, the role of pattern-recognition receptors in rejection, the relationship between lung allografts and bone-marrow myelopoiesis, and the contribution of secondary lymphoid organs to transplantation.
Prof. Gelman’s research aims to advance understanding of innate and adaptive immune responses following transplantation and support the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to improve long-term outcomes following lung transplantation. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and has resulted in extensive peer-reviewed research.
Prof. Gelman is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and has contributed to several International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) working groups and consensus statements.
