Andrew Fisher is Tenured Professor of Respiratory Transplant Medicine at Newcastle University and Transplant Pulmonologist at the Institute of Transplantation, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. He is Co-Director of the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit in Organ Donation and Transplantation. His clinical and research interests are in advanced severe lung disease and lung transplantation. He leads a research group focused on understanding mechanisms of lung injury and repair including before and after lung transplantation.
Prof. Fisher has published extensive original research in the field and co-authored an invited review on lung transplantation in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2024.
He has extensive experience in clinical trials and is Chief Investigator of the E-CLAD UK trial investigating extracorporeal photopheresis for the treatment of CLAD after lung transplantation.
Prof. Fisher is the UK National Clinical Lead for EVLP and is overseeing the launch of a pilot national EVLP service to serve all UK lung transplant centres as part of a new NHS Organ Assessment and Recovery Centre Programme. He has served the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) in numerous roles, including Programme Chair in 2016, ISHLT President in 2017, and Chair of the Publications Oversight Committee from 2020 to 2024.
